An Exegetical Moment – 1 Corinthians 2:14

February 01, 2009 By: P.R.E.Z. Category: bible, witnessing

But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned (1 Corinthians 2:14).

I was on Facebook this morning and saw a young man who had decided to come into a comment session and voice his opinion. He’s an atheist but found it necessary to comment on an all Christian thread. As all the Christian commented one by one, I saw from the very beginning that he was a bad seed. So, I simply quoted scripture, calling him a fool and wicked and that he should turn from his way. Harsh, yeah, I know but indulge me and read on.

Forty-five comments later, his true colors really began to shine.

One thing I kept seeing was the Christians saying things that were unbiblical in addition to bashing the guy. They wouldn’t have called it that since they were using phrases like “open your heart” and “give God a chance”. He blatantly said he didn’t believe and had no interest in believing though he allegedly read the Bible forty times. My last comments on that thread was to leave him alone.

Scripture tells us that there will be people who harden their heart against God. They won’t believe because they don’t want to believe. They have counted the cost and it’s too much (Luke 14:22-33). They love darkness more than light (John 3:19).

I know the young people meant well but by not reading the scriptures and doing what it says, they fell right into the trap of bashing this guy but being politically correct about it.

Reading the Bible only proves that you can read. His reading of the scriptures meant nothing without pure humility and seeking the truth. The condition of his heart and responses proved that. There are college professors all over the country that study the Bible and don’t believe a word of it. It’s only through the illumination of the Holy Spirit that the scriptures come alive and we see things as He sees things.

Scripture mandates that if they won’t receive you to simply move on without contention (Luke 9:5). Don’t throw your pearls before swine (Matthew 7:6). There are people who are truly seeking the Truth.

Don’t waste your time on those who are plainly hostile against God and the scriptures. I know it may be hard for some of you because you feel compassion for that soul. But in some cases, no matter what you say or how you say it, they have already made up their mind not to believe. Keep moving.
