A Call For Common Sense

March 12, 2009 By: P.R.E.Z. Category: Thomas Paine, common sense, constitution, freedom, tyranny

In 1776, Thomas Paine wrote what is arguably one of the United States most influential treatise on the reason why it should be a sovereign nation. It was called Common Sense and it should over 120,000 copies in three months with estimates close to half a million for that year. And this is without cars, trucks, or the internet.

It’s no doubt that today our nation is in a crisis. Economic. Cultural. Moral. The voice of truth needs to ring out like Thomas Paine and others.

I saw this video a while back and it is truly powerful. It’s a must see and a must listen for anyone who is serious about being a citizen of the United States. We have to understand what is going on in this nation and not sit by idly giving excuses on why we won’t speak out for the cause of what is right. As a Christian, it’s our duty.

My hope that as you listen that it will stir your heart to action and that you would pray to the Lord about what you can do as a Christian first, and as a citizen of this great nation called the United States of America.

I’m a fifth-grade teacher in Colorado, and an intrical part of teaching civics is providing students with our primary sources: the founding documents. This is critical in understanding what “We the People” really means. Today, as they did over 230 years ago, those documents instill in students the belief that all our voices are important. Everyone of our citizens are given the right to pursue liberty. Futures do not have to be inevitable and “Little voices” can make dramatic impacts on events. That is Thomas Paine’s greatest contribution to our country. His pamphlet, Common Sense, spoke to all the voices in the 13 colonies during a time of great fear and indecision. He gave a vast number of citizens a vision of what each could do, 176 days before the Declaration of Independence. A belief that power should radiate from the citizens. That message is still paramount to all our students today. For that pamphlet alone, Paine needs to be recognized as a integral part of the American miracle.

Every time I see this video, it inspires me. The way he delivers this and the seemingly unending truths in it is enough to wake many apathetic citizens.

The fact that the citizens of this nation are mostly ignorant when it comes to our found documents is a travesty. Those in power would rather lie and keep the populace unaware on the true history of this nation. It’s about power and slowly stripping it from the citizenry which has been done in leaps and bounds over the past 50 years.

We just may need another revolution. That would be terrible. Yet it may be necessary.
