The Courage Of Conviction

September 25, 2008 By: P.R.E.Z. Category: Camp Firefly, Christian, Fireproof, Ray Comfort, kirk cameron

Overall, the Truth Manifesto is dedicated to preserving the Christian principles in our culture today. Hollywood normally gets talked about from the opposite side of the spectrum since its adamantly against anything that’s biblically Christian. So when I see an actor standing up for his convictions and they’re consistent, it’s time for a post that applauds that actor.

From Hollywood To Heaven

In 1985, ABC launched a family sitcom called Growing Pains starring Kirk Cameron, Alan Thicke (yes, this is Robin Thicke’s dad), Johanna Kerns, Jeremy Miller, and Tracey Gold. Cameron was indisputably the star of the show and it was a hit within a short amount of time. The series lasted for seven years, having its last episode in 1992.

One of the main reasons that the show was cancelled was because Cameron, a self proclaimed atheist, became a Christian in 1990. He began to question scripts, refuse to work with people, and generally demanded that the show begin to be more Christian oriented. The problem with that is heathens will be heathens. Their mindset is stooped in rebellion against God. You can’t make people be good.

Cameron went on to become stronger in his faith. He starred as Buck Williams in the Left Behind movie series, had appearances on Touched By An Angel, Family Law, and Jack and Bobby. The fame that he had as Mike Seaver waned considerably but that didn’t stop him. He became co-host with Ray Comfort on the the Way of the Master television program, formed Camp Firefly, a camp for serious ill children and their families, and now has another new movie out called Fireproof.

No Room For Compromise

Recently he was on the Today Show where he talked about his new movie. In it, he explains why, even in acting, he will not kiss another woman:

The Hating Continues

After making a statement like this, you would think that most would see this as a noble and honorable thing to do.

At a website called the A.V. Club, an article was posted there titled Kirk Cameron Doesn’t Understand Acting in response to the interview on the Today Show. The 300+ responses that came afterward is 99% anti-Christian.

Here are just a few of the comments:

Christians don’t believe a lake of fire anymore. Now it’s a lake of aborted fetuses.

As if casting directors needed another reason not to hire Kirk Cameron.

Hey man, I love the Jesus, too. But I hate stupid ignorant idiot Christians like Kirk Cameron.

I do find it refreshing to be reminded that the Christian God, the amorphous entity of the old guy with a beard and the young guy on a cross, is, if not evil, definitely insane.

No one cares about your beliefs. Please move along and stop wasting our time with your confusion of mythology for biography.

On and on and on.

Let’s Not Forget

When I read this, it grieves my heart to an extent. People like this I personally have no reason to go back and forth with unless it’s here at the Truth Manifesto, a reality recently when I wrote the post Homosexuals Lovin‘ It At McDonalds and someone posted in the comments. My reason for this is quite simple: to be a centurion for the Truth.

Those of us that truly want to follow Christ should not be looking for the approval of a world that hates God. There’s something wrong when the world likes you (Luke 6:26). We should be firmly standing in the Truth (Hebrews 3:4-6). This is not a popularity contest. Jesus came and didn’t get everyone’s approval, so how do you think we will (John 15:20)? The fact of the matter is simple: if you are truly standing for the tenets, principles, and law laid out in the Scriptures, you will be hated (Amos 5:10).

I have to give Mr. Cameron credit where credit is due. He’s holding it down and hasn’t looked back. He truly loves the Lord and the way we see that is the fact he’s still walking in the faith. I’ve personally known people who made a decision for God with their mouth only but weren’t truly converted (Matt. 21:28-32). Their life said otherwise. All kinds of things got in the way of them following the Lord (Luke 8:5-15).

Ultimately, what this goes to show is that it’s not all bad news. There are brothers and sisters holding it down for holiness (2 Corin. 7:1). However, Jesus never promised an easy road. The exact opposite actually (Luke 10:3). But we know if we trust in Him Proverbs 3:5), stand firm no matter where we’re at (Revelations 3:11), the testimony we’ll receive when we stand before God will be, “Well done, my good and faithful servant.”
