Our Christian Heritage – Edward Everett
In addition, he served in the House of Representatives (1825-1835), as a professor of Greek literature at Harvard University, and as Harvard’s president (1846-1849). He has two cities named in his honor in Pennsylvania and Massachusetts. His engraving is found on fifty dollar silver certificates issued in 1890-1891. Known as “Everetts“, they are still considered legal tender and often go for $3000.
Everett said at the Gettysburg Address:
“All the distinctive features and superiority of our republican institutions are derived from the teachings of scripture.”
Upon admitting the first black student to Harvard, Everett stated:
“If this boy passes the examinations he will be admitted and if the white students choose to withdraw, all the income of the college will be devoted to his education.”
